Ithilien can be found at Turoa Ski Field Road aka Ohakune Mountain Road Scenic Drive. To reach the film site, you will need to travel as far as being the Mangawhero Falls.

Rangitikei Riv Gorge – River Anduin

The river starts from the Kaimanawa Ranges (southeast of Lake Taupo), flows through Central Plateau together with out at South Taranaki Bight with Tangimoana, 40 kilometres southeast of Wanganui.

Steep vertical cliffs, deep canyons boulders and ancient shellfish produce a unique setting for voyage activities. The world-famous selling point, Gravity Canyon, is situated here.

Waitarere Forest – Trollshaw Forest together with Osgiliath Wood

The Waitarere Forest is a the south of Foxton to the Kapiti Coast. This is among the most lesser-known forest track not so common for holidaymakers. If you want to look in, do bring adequate food, water and a GPS along.

Kapiti Shore, on the other side, is a popular holiday site for many Kiwis. It is about one hour from Wellington city, and get spectacular sea perspectives, glorious sunsets, with an untouched native forest together with dramatic landscapes.

Otaki and Otaki Gorge – Leaving the Shire

I saw it the impression I proceeded to go somewhere in Otaki once for a camp. It was an outdoorsy camp plus they recommended not to take valuables. There is no reception for any mobile phone either.

There are several tracks that go with Otaki Gorge Road as a result of the gorge. However, this locations used to exhibit the Hobbits leaving the Shire in the Fellowship of the Ring are not accessible by public.

Paraparaumu : Pelennor Fields

It is a small suburban town near Wellington. The Maori name parapara means food chafes, and umu is a great earth oven. It probably refers to the arrival of some sort of war party and identified only few scrapes involving food in abandoned earth ovens.

The closed up shots for Battle in the Pelennor Fields in Lord of the Rings were filmed at Queen Elizabeth Park near Paraparaumu along with the paddocks near MacKays Crossing. You can also read the Wellington Tramway Museum the following on weekends.

Mt Victoria – \’Get heli-copter flight road\’ and \’Escape from the Nazgul\’

Go up Mount Victoria (Mt Vic for short) to obtain an excellent view of the city, Cook Straits together with harbour. It is quite a long uphill walk. Try Metlink bus #20 on weekdays if you ever don\’t drive and really want to check out the view.

I imagine I went up a few times by car, enjoyed this view and wind while I was there, but not much impression of it now. You can also pass through Mount Victoria Tunnel when travelling between city middle and airport.

Mt Victoria together with Lyall Bay – Dunharrow

When my memory is proper, this was one of the sites I went to help on Wellington Rover Tours. Since I can\’t even remember the exact scenes from Lord of the Rings, I don\’t have much impression of this location.

The close-up golf swings for Dunharrow were filmed at this location while the extensive shots were filmed in the South Island. Movie effects have a way of merging the various scenes together seamlessly!
