When choosing a dentist, you will need to take a number of factors into consideration. If you have dental insurance, however, the first step in the selection process will be to find out which dentists are covered through your insurance.

Many dental insurance policies restrict the choices of dentists that can used in order to gain the full advantages of the coverage. Those dentists that are included in the network have agreed to abide by the guidelines as established by the insurance company, including agreeing to receive only a specific amount of money from the insurance company on various procedures.

Once you know which dentists are available in your network, you can begin to narrow down your choices even further. Of course, if you are unable to find a dentist in your network that you feel comfortable with, most policies will allow you to go to a dentist that outside of your network. The downside to taking this step is the fact that you will have to pay more out of your own pocket toward your visits and treatments. Over time, this can become quite costly.

If you are hoping to stay within your network in order to reap the greatest benefits of your insurance, talk to your co-workers about their experiences with dentists in your network. Reputation goes a long way when it comes to selecting the best dentist for you. If you find that many of your co-workers prefer going to one specific dentist, you will likely enjoy going to that dentist as well. Similarly, if you have co-workers that have had a bad experience with a particular dentist, you know to avoid using the services that dentist offers.

Of course, proximity to your home is another factor. Depending on where you work, many of your co-workers may live in an area that is far from where you live. As such, you should seek out those co-workers that live in your area in order to find out who they go to for their dental hygiene care.
